Rosé parade. Recent Press

Last year we released our first Rosé in decades, probably because French friends had re-introduced us to the pleasure of sipping Rosé on balmy summer evenings. Due to our Mendocino Zinfandel connections, we realized that we could have access to the very same varieties that compose our favorite French Rosés. Best of all, most of the grapes would be from ancient goblet vines. The 2002 had received some very flattering reviews which gave us courage to parade out another serious pink wine. Two vineyards used in this 2003 cuvée are the same as in the 2002. The majority of the blend came from Debbie Pallini's ancient Grenache vines which are lightly cropped and grown on rocky soil; the winemaker toned this lot in 132 gallon French oak puncheons. We gave Benedetti's French clone Syrah a little less skin contact in this newer vintage in an effort to craft a more delicate texture. The biggest transformation was the addition of grapes from Troy and Tina's antique Carignan vines. Tina is Debbie's sister and we handled these grapes like the Grenache.

Ed Pallini's daughter Debbie grew the old vine Grenache portion of the old vine Rosé. "2002 Rosé: Exceptional. Dramatic aroma of raspberry / strawberry with a bit of cherry for depth. Dry, but with enough alcohol (13.5%) to add texture; no phenolic bite. One of the finest rosés I have ever tasted. Drink with anything or all by itself." -Dan Berger’s Vintage Experiences
John Benedetti and trusted hand Rafael  grew the Syrah portion of our blend. "2002 Rosé: This great wine kind of sneaks up on you. First you think it’s a modest blush wine, but it’s awfully hard not to take another sip. Then you realize how good it is. Raspberries, vanilla and cinnamon, and bone dry. Made from Grenache and Syrah. Another super value from Navarro." -Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Although the Carignan comprises only 11% of the blend, it adds distinctive lavender floral notes and tropical flavors which complement the more insistent strawberry bravado of Grenache and reminds us of guava. Gold Medal winner.

You’ve probably had Troy Satterwhite's  old vine Petite Sirah and Mourvèdre before; this year he delivered old vine Carignan to complete Navarro's 2003 Cuvée. "2002 Rosé: 90 points. A light, floral rosé, this tastes like a good rosado from Navarra, even if it is grown by Navarro nowhere near Spain. This wine has a firm acid profile and a mineral bite, finishing clean. Chill it for grilled baby lamb chops and roasted tomatoes." -Wine & Spirits Magazine
