The Garden Spot was the first of our upper vineyards. The site had a spring in a low spot, creating a swampy area, as well as several ravines and an old fig tree fighting to survive. Our solution: vineyard liposuction.

Garden Spot vineyard fig tree. This tree was planted in 1906, the year of the San Francisco earthquake. When we reshaped the vineyard site and added irrigation in 1994, this tree was quite small, so we wanted to protect it. We built a metal frame to hold netting to keep the birds out and we expected the tree to grow somewhat. Taken only five years later in 1999, this photo shows the tree had already outgrown the cage in girth. Currently the tree is about 60 feet in diameter and bears many buckets of sweet, juicy green figs every July.

Using heavy machinery, we removed the topsoil to a stockpile and set rocky soil aside in another pile. We regraded the field to improve drainage and built a small pond for irrigation. Finally, we mixed the rocks back with the topsoil and spread it evenly over the planned vineyard. We planted with four clones on four different rootstocks and this cuvée is drawn from four of the nine possible clone/rootstock combinations. Platinum Medal winner. Best of Class. 95 points.
