Regional taste Recent Press

Pinot Blanc has a regional story in Europe. In France, the only appellation that permits Pinot Blanc is Alsace. What does a good Alsatian Pinot Blanc taste like? That's a tricky question because Alsace producers often label a wide range of white blends as Pinot Blanc, even when the wine doesn't contain genuine Pinot Blanc grapes. That said, Pinot Blanc grapes are commonly used in Crémant d'Alsace to bring freshness and finesse. In Germany, you'll see the grape bottled as Weissburgunder (white Burgundy) and in Italy it's known as Pinot Bianco. Most European producers aim for a crisp white with a clean, refreshing profile. Malolactic fermentation and new oak are usually avoided, though some makers opt for a touch of seasoned oak.

[above] A time-lapse photo of tractors each outfitted with a rack of LED lights to illuminate the grape vines our crew is picking. Three tractors are required for a smooth harvest. The lights at the right are from the tractor taking a full load of grapes up the hill to the winery. The "V" of lights on the left are from a tractor returning to the vineyard with empty picking bins. The most distant lights are illuminating the picking area for the crew. As soon as those bins are full, the tractor heads for the winery and is quickly replaced by the tractor with empty bins.
A young Pinot Blanc vine with many full clusters. Pinot Blanc grapes were once misidentified as Chardonnay. However, Chardonnay leaves are easily identifiable as it is the only varietal with a leaf that has an open sinus at the stem. [below]

Navarro's offering is 100% Pinot Blanc—70% clone FPS 6 and 30% ENTAV 54—harvested ripe in late September. After pressing, the juice was naturally clarified by cold-settling and then cool-fermented in two neutral French oak casks. It spent six months sur lie to build a bit more complexity. The result is a light to medium-bodied wine with delicate notes of nectarine, quince and lime zest, finished with a bright, refreshing acidity. Gold Medal winner. Best of Class. 97 points.
