Pinot Grigio wines are produced in three major grape-growing areas in northern Italy: Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto. Navarro's Pinot Grigio is grown in Boontling Loam—a deep, moderately fertile, fine‑loamy terrace soil formed in mixed alluvium with high clay content at deeper depths. The closest Italian comparison might be the Friuli Isonzo or Grave, DOC wine regions in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia with their deep, coarse and well‑drained alluvial/gravelly soils. Nonetheless, Philo Pinot Grigio was grown under a California sun, a dozen miles from the Pacific Ocean. Despite being grown on a different continent, the style is similar.
