Pinot Gris is one of the great grapes of Alsace where it is often grown on the steep hillsides that surround picturesque villages like Eguisheim and Riquewihr. In Europe, the flat valley floor is usually used for row crops, hay and orchards while the vineyards are perched on the hillsides where the soils are thinner and the exposure is better. That's why Navarro's Pinot Gris is planted high above Navarro's tasting room on what we call Middle Ridge and also on neighboring Ordway's Redwood Ridge. The sunny southern exposures ensure that the almost blue grapes will ripen in Anderson Valley's chilly climate. The meager loam means the vines won't have too much vegetative growth. Farming on hillsides is more complicated and expensive than valley farming, especially if you don't want to sacrifice the scanty soil to erosion.

Navarro's Pinot Gris is aged in traditional Alsatian oak ovals. When an oval needed a repair last year we had to ship it to France; few obstacles are too daunting in the pursuit of fine wine. "Exceptional. Spiced with peach and other stone fruit, and a very rich entry that's nonetheless dry. A near-perfect rendition of an often-thin wine." -VintageExperiences.com
Pinot Gris is a white wine grape but it looks almost like Pinot Noir, a close relative, when it ripens. This variety is prone to genetic instability and here you can see a single cluster of Pinot Gris that has both dark and light berries.

We always leave a cover crop between the rows, all harvesting and weeding under the vines must be done by hand and no vehicles are allowed in the vineyard during the winter when the soils are wet... you have to climb the mountain on foot. Is it worth the extra effort? We think so. These grapes were fermented and aged in traditional oak ovals. We left the barest tad of residual sugar that compliments the rich, oily texture of the wine and the peachy fruit. It is a great match for the flavors of fall: roasted butternut squash or a bean and sausage soup. Gold Medal winner. Best of Class.

Storm clouds threaten the Pinot Gris harvest on Middle Ridge and pickers take a break from the frenzied pace. Once the rain sets in no trucks or tractors should enter the field.
