Early appearance Recent Press

For over two decades Navarro has produced Navarrouge as an easy drinking, red house wine and during that same period of time, Navarro has been replanting our older fields of Pinot Noir as well as adding several new blocks. Finally by 2018, we had reached our goal of growing more Pinot Noir grapes than we needed for our red and rosé Pinot Noir wines, enabling us to select the best lots for our varietal bottlings. We had plenty of good excess 2018 Pinot Noir—46% of this blend—to become the base wine for our red house wine. Because of Pinot's moderate alcohol, gentle tannins and cherry-berry flavors, it marries well with the other weightier components: 18% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petite Sirah.

Pinot Noir seeds are bitter and to avoid breaking them by using pumps, we punch-down Pinot by hand twice daily. [above] Temperature varies within the must as the fermentation rate varies within this three-quarter ton bin of fruit; wearing thin surgical gloves allows us to feel the temperature differences and mix the must to even out the heat and rate of fermentation.
A mostly-green pinot noir cluster at the beginning of veraison.
A typical cone-shaped Pinot Noir cluster at the beginning of veraison. [above] The clusters are small—four to five inches in length—and frequently have a mixture of berry size; the larger berries in this cluster have two seeds, the smaller ones have one seed and there are a few tiny, non-seeded berries.

The grapes for all five varieties in this 2018 cuvée were grown, or purchased for, Navarro's varietal wine production—no cheap grapes here—and after completing our varietal bottlings we ended up with excess wine. Top quality fruit from a respected appellation is rarely used to produce a modestly priced house wine but it enables Navarro to produce a scrumptious bargain red, vintage after vintage. Round and complex with briary cherry-berry flavors and a touch of plum and rosemary.
