We kicked off our blending tastings for the 2024 Edelzwicker in mid-March 2025. Typically, the main players are Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling. Since Pinot Gris is the most delicate of the three, our first blind tasting featured five different blends of Gewürztraminer and Riesling, ranging from 80% Gewürz with 20% Riesling to 80% Riesling with 20% Gewürz. The winning combo was a balanced 50/50 blend—each grape added something essential, with neither variety taking the lead. Next, we added Pinot Gris into the mix, and the best blend was a third of each grape. We also considered adding a touch of Pinot Blanc, thinking its minerally, stone-fruit profile might enhance the blend.

At the final tasting, we decided that Pinot Blanc didn't really improve the wine so it isn't part of this cuvée. The result? A fruit-forward, crisp and flavorful wine with just a touch of residual grape sugars—perfect for warm-weather meals like baby shrimp and avocado salad with garden-fresh dill.
