French counsel Recent Press Navarro Kitchen

Navarro first planted Pinot Noir grapes in 1974; there was only one other grower in the Anderson Valley with Pinot and our kids weren’t yet born. Now there are over sixty vineyards here coaxing this finicky grape into brilliance and our daughter Sarah has completed her graduate research on its phenolic structure. The Anderson Valley is, without a doubt, making its mark among the world’s wine regions as an extraordinary place to grow Pinot Noir. Questions abound: which clone? what trellis? where in the valley? whose barrels? Here at Navarro we have developed some strong opinions from 30 years experience but we haven’t been shy about asking advice from our friends in Burgundy where they’ve been making the stuff for over 1000 years. Sarah’s research is adding to our understanding. Navarro’s Deep End Blend represents our best Pinot Noir grapes, punched down in open top fermentors and aged in Remond barrels crafted from Allier oak. Most of this bottling sold as futures at Navarro's barrel tasting in August 2003 but we still have about 60 bottles available for those who missed out or want more. The 2002 is well toned without being muscle bound; the fruity core hints of cherries, olives, chocolate and spice. Great with braised duck. Gold Medal winner. Best of Class.

Luc Pavelot was an intern at Navarro for the 1992 harvest. His family has been making wine since medieval times in Pernand- Vergelesses. After the 2004 harvest Sarah and Jules got to share viticultural notes as well as admire Luc and Corine’s growing family in Côte de Beaune.

Sarah discovering how we really made Pinot Noir in 1985. "Only when someone has taken the time to truly understand its potential can Pinot be coaxed into its fullest expression. And when that happens, its flavors are the most haunting and brilliant and subtle and thrilling and ancient on the planet." Miles in the movie "Sideways."

"Body: Medium-full. Dryness: Dry. Comments: Very good. Aromas of brioche, plum, black cherry and strawberry; fleshy yet with silky texture; plush tannins; brimming with ripe plum, strawberry, blueberry and spice flavors." -Steve Pitcher, San Francisco Chronicle
Sarah was graciously entertained in Burgundy by Catherine Desbois-Mouchel from Tonnellerie Remond who has supplied Navarro with our favorite barrels for making Pinot Noir since 1984.
