Fair deal Recent Press

This September the Wine Spectator Magazine listed Navarro's 2001 Zinfandel at the top of its list of value wines and applauded Navarro as a value brand. We know there are posh wineries that would shun this kind of recognition and compete in asking for the highest price per bottle regardless of the contents. At Navarro we don't consider value a pejorative term; we know that our customers are tickled that we can sneak so much quality into a wine priced well below market. We learned a lot about the value of fair dealing from our Italian neighbors, some of whom pioneered growing Zinfandel in Mendocino. Navarro's Zin comes from some of the smallest and oldest vineyards in the county that are nestled around old homesteads. All of the vines are pruned into the classic "goblet" shape. Navarro doesn't keep prices moderate by thievery; all five vineyards that grow grapes for Navarro's Zinfandel are paid fairly and promptly for the fruit they have so proudly grown for generations. In fact Navarro pays top prices for Mendocino Zinfandel.
Selling direct allows Navarro to avoid the markups of the normal winery- distributor- retailer model. This $19.00 bottle is made from recognized vineyards whose grapes fetch some of the highest prices in Mendocino county.

Navarro's winemaker Jim Klein looks over Ed Pallini's grapes. For years Mendocino grape contracts were settled with a hand shake in the vineyard.

We keep our bottle prices moderate by selling the majority of Navarro's wine directly to consumers like you, either at our tasting room, through the mail or via the internet. So what's in this bottle is a genuine, old-fashioned value; jammy wild blackberry, briar and spice flavors with aromas of smoke and vanilla from the French oak barrels. Gold Medal winner.
Head trained vines are named bush vines in Australia. It is an effective method of pruning in a Mediterranean climate like Ed Barry's vineyard in Talmage that has plenty of sun and low summer rainfall. It is also easy to prune and limits the crop which enhances intensity.
