Birds and bees Recent Press Navarro Kitchen

There is a good reason Muscat is one of the oldest grapes to be cultivated around the Mediterranean. Its exotic orange-like aromas are as flowery and appealing as a grape can get. We have never known a picker, vintner or bird able to resist popping a few fresh Muscat berries into his mouth during harvest. Provided we beat the birds and the bees to it, some years we make a dessert wine from this variety. We even had to compete with the wildlife when we picked earlier for this, our dry version. There is more than one kind of Muscat but Muscat Blanc is the one with the smallest berries and the most enticing flavors. This estate-grown fruit was fermented and aged eight months in oak ovals in the Alsatian tradition. The heady aromas and tart, dry finish are tantalizingly good with Asian cuisine, a kind of yin/yang of perfume and tang. Gold Medal winner. Best of Show.

It's hard to keep bees and wasps away from the powerful perfume of ripe Muscat.

"Exceptional. Huge pear/spice aroma with hints of lime and hauntingly orange-blossom-y, a perfect dry Muscat."
