One of our observations over the last four decades is that grapes grown in organic and biodynamic vineyards seem to produce superior wines. At first, we were a little skeptical, but since we grow grapes without using herbicides or insecticides, we soon realized that organic and biodynamic growers simply have to spend a lot more time in the vineyard to avoid problems that would require the use of heavy-duty sprays. We believe that this attention to detail is one reason sustainably grown fruit yields superior wines. This Syrah was produced entirely from biodynamically grown grapes at Dark Horse Vineyards, owned and operated by the Dolan family. We purchased our first Syrah from Dark Horse in 2007 and we liked the vineyard so much that now all the wine we label as Syrah (as well as the
Grenache and
Mourvèdre featured in this release) are produced entirely from Dark Horse's grapes. Black cherry-huckleberry flavors dominate the conversation with whispers of forest floor, mushroom and chocolate.
