Mo' mo Recent Press

Many years ago we visited Bandol, France. After a memorable lunch at Domaine Tempier, we became fascinated with Mourvèdre, the dominant grape variety of the region. We returned to Mendocino excited about this grape variety and a few years later we made our first Mourvèdre wine. We somehow expected it to taste similar to Bandol rouge—which it didn't. We've learned a lot in the last three decades with lessons from rootstock-clonal trials and planting in different Anderson Valley microclimates and soil-types. We also learned a difficult lesson from smoke taint. We now realize that terroir—the environment, including factors such as the climate, soil, topography, natural disasters, vineyardist and winemaker—has more effect on aromatics and flavor than the grape variety itself. In 2012, we were fortunate to find a tiny Mourvèdre planting at Dark Horse Vineyards—farmed biodynamically. Don't expect this wine to taste like a Bandol rouge as it was grown in Mendocino and produced by Navarro. None-the-less, it tastes delicious, exhibits good varietal flavors and is priced right for a memorable lunch or dinner at your house. Gold Medal winner. Best of Class.
