Sangiovese for any day

Don't wait until summer to savor rosé; this special release is a charming way to stay in the pink for holidays (or any day) at home. Nighttime temperatures become remarkably chilly as harvest approaches in many of the best new world appellations. Grapes retain most of their acidity with diurnal temperature changes of 40° to 50° during ripening, which is perfect for producing world-class rosé as well as the best red wine. That wide temperature swing is just what happens in Mendocino. Our 2021 Rosé of Sangiovese is produced from organically grown grapes from Gibson Vineyards in Hopland. The vines are sited on gravely loam soils formed off the alluvial fans of Feliz Creek Canyon and because it is a warmer viticultural climate than Anderson Valley, it is better suited for many red wine-grape varieties including Sangiovese.

Sangiovese was first mentioned in an Italian Viticulture treatise in 1600. It is the primary red wine grape variety in Tuscany and it was assumed that its origins were Tuscan but recent DNA analysis revealed that one of Sangiovese parents is an obscure variety, Cabrese di Montenuovo, only found in Calabria—the toe of the Italian boot.

[above] Our 2021 Rosé of Sangiovese is produced from organically grown grapes from southern Mendocino County near Hopland; it's a warmer viticultural climate than Anderson Valley and better suited for Sangiovese.

We crushed the grapes to a tank and then immediately returned to press; our short skin contact allowed just enough time to build mouth filling roundness while sidestepping Sangiovese's notable tannins. Navarro's 2021 Rosé of Sangiovese aromas bring to mind lime with flavors smacking of cherry and pineapple galette. This may be the perfect wine for your holiday ham or brisket.
