We irrigate our vines with rainwater that we collect in ponds during the winter and this is the second time in six years when all our ponds have filled in January. Last year we were so excited to have full ponds that we created a special "Ponds are Full" sampler to celebrate. Never count your chickens! A few weeks after the email was sent, our upper pond sprang a big leak and by summer the pond was nearly empty. Consequently, for the fourth year in a row, Navarro’s vines were on a greatly reduced irrigation schedule and they produced less than half of the normal yield.
Despite January road closures, mud slides and downed trees, we are excited to have full ponds again; time to celebrate rainbows. We remain wary that the drought will return next year but hopeful that in 2023 our wines will get their full water rations—unless we find a new leak. Navarro’s Never Count Your Chickens sampler features six Gold Medal winning wines that dominate our personal consumption at home.
