We produced our first Chenin Blanc from John and Michele Young's vineyard in 1997 and this is our fourteenth vintage from the same exceptional site. There isn't much Chenin Blanc planted in Mendocino County, a mere 70 acres, and much of it is unfortunately planted on fertile river bottom. When we came across the Young's vineyard, we were immediately excited by the old vines and the rocky soil. After we made the 1997 wine, our enthusiasm increased and we've produced wine from these same vines ever since. Historically Navarro's Chenin style is based upon the wines of Anjou and Touraine where up to 80% of the blend is Chenin augmented with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. This vintage our tasting panel selected a wine with 10% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Chardonnay.		The Young's Chenin displays its typical crisp, mineral-melon fruit which is enhanced with key lime notes from the Sauvignon and the central core is made creamier from the Chardonnay. Visiting the Youngs over the years. 1999: The Young family at home, John, Michele, Ryan and Matt. 2004: John and Ryan with their heritage vines at budbreak. 2008: Young's guard dog protecting the vineyard from Navarro's winemaker. Unfortunately John passed away after the 2008 harvest and Michele sold the ranch after this 2010 harvest. We will miss working with Michele. We are hopeful the new owners are diligent farmers and that this 2010 won't be Navarro's last vintage from this vineyard gem.

2011 Chenin Blanc

THREE STARS Are you looking for a really good value white wine? If so, call Navarro and order a case of this wine. It is Very Good. It is almost clear colored and opens with fragrant and appealing ripe pear bouquet with a hint of clementine. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, crisp and displays plenty of acidity that mellows with air. The flavor profile is a very nice blend of lots of flavors. I detected Bosc pear, green apple, lime, and white pepper. I also got some hints of pineapple and minerality as well. The finish is dry and its acidity is present here as well. 2003 Chenin Blanc

To me, the mood of Navarro's crisp dry Chenin Blanc is captured in the image that appears in Botticelli’s Primavera of the three graces dancing in a circle, hands enlaced, in diaphanous gowns-free-spirited and ethereal. Made from venerable 50-year old vines on John Young's Mendocino estate, the Chenin Blanc grapes were aged just one month in seasoned barrels, so as not to overpower the natural delicate melony-peach-apple perfume of the grapes. A small dose of Sauvignon Blanc was added to help smooth out the finish. With just 0.3% residual sugar, the wine is pleasantly dry. - Barbi Gifford Shimer, The Vine Line, May 2004.

2000 Chenin Blanc

This Navarro offering is the rare exception that demonstrates the great heights American Chenin Blanc can soar to when planted in an appropriately cool climate. In addition to climate, the fruit for this Chenin is drawn from old (planted 1946), low yielding vines. Wine-master Ted Bennett has wisely kept the oak to a minimum and has eschewed an ML fermentation to retain the grape's innate fruit flavors. A whiff releases a potpourri of wild flowers, dry hay and green melon smells. This white fairly bursts in the mouth with fresh pears, peach and melon fruit tones with a tangy twist of lemon. The dry finish is remarkably long and distinguished by a subtle minerality. Their rare jewel is a wonderful respite from Chardonnay overload and a perfect foil for the lighter meals of spring and summer. - Hi-Time Wine Cellars, April 2001..
